Description
In the archaeological site of Navarino Square, there are ruins of significant buildings, each with a different use, which belonged to an extensive complex known as the Palace of Galerius. This complex, whose construction was begun by the emperor Galerius in the early part of the 4th century AD, was the official residence of the emperor and his court on their periodic visits to Thessaloniki. According to various sources, the palace was used by many emperors during the 4th and 5th centuries, including Theodosius I. The complex, which has not yet been fully excavated, was erected on the outskirts of the city, close to the Hippodrome and near the eastern walls. It comprises the imperial quarters, interior courtyards, reception halls and audience chambers.
