Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art

Helexpo, 154 Egnatia St. GR 54636 Thessaloniki

Description

The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art was established in 1979 by a group of visionary people who wanted to create an institution that would on the one hand promote Greek and international contemporary art by informing the public about art and aesthetics, and on the other publicise contemporary Greek cultural life abroad. These aims are achieved by organising solo, group, and retrospective exhibitions, round tables, and talks and by taking part in international programmes. This is a living museum, which follows cultural movement at an international level.

The core of the collection is Alexandros Iolas's donation of 30 works by internationally acclaimed artists. The museum was originally housed in the Filkeram-Johnson factory, but now both the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions occupy a specially modified pavilion in the centre of the Helexpo grounds.

The museum shop sells all the publications connected with the group and solo exhibitions which the museum has organised (catalogues, posters, silk-screen prints, engravings, and postcards), a limited number of copies of small art objects bearing the signatures of such artists as Picasso, Modigliani, Pavlos, Akrithakis, Fasianos, Mytaras, and Varotsos, books on contemporary art (painting, sculpture, photography), monographs by Greek and foreign artists, and monographs on major movements of the 20th century.
