Description

The 10th Directorate of Byzantine Antiquities has based an exhibition "Christian Chalkidiki" in the village Ouranoupoli, whence visitors and pilgrims embark to Mount Athos. The exhibition takes place in a building near to a tower of Ouranoupoli.


The exhibits are dated to the Early Christian, Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods and are collected from all peninsula of Chalkidiki. The exhibition purpose is acquaintance of visitors by that Chalkidiki has many important values of the Christian period which are the infinite treasure belonging to monasteries of Athos.


On the ground floor there are 14 icons (11 big and 3 small) with 18th on the beginning of 20 centuries, from monasteries, churches and chapels located in Chalkidiki. The special attention is caused by an icon of the Panagia and the Christ on a throne, dated to 1728. Also it is necessary to note frescos of national type which detached from the arches of a chapel of the Holy Trinity, belonging to a monastery Agia Anastassia (16-17 centuries). Visitors can admire a bronze cross of 11-12th century, and a calendar of service of holidays of the September, created in 1806 and remained in the field of Kassandra's open prisons.


On the second floor are finds of Christianity from excavation in Chalkidiki: faience, unpainted pottery, fixtures, bronze coins, jewels, stamps and arrows from Potidea, Toroni, Paleokastro, Agio Mamas, Nea Sillata (the medieval city of Brya) Galatista (a tomb of Agia Paraskevi), and also from cemeteries of Ierisso.
